- Peabody was a homeopathic pharmacist doing business in Boston. He was Nathaniel Hawthorne's brother-in-law, Hawthorne having married Sophia Peabody.
- The Clapp referred to in the letter was Otis Clapp, of the Boston pharmacy Otis Clapp which continued to operate until the 1950s, "and without benefit of a soda fountain and such-like."
